Grotta della Poesia: ticket prices, opening hours, and local secrets to enjoy this paradise.
Nestled along the Adriatic coast of Salento, just a few kilometers from Otranto, the Grotta della Poesia (Cave of Poetry) is much more than just a swimming spot. It is an archaeological site, a living legend, and—according to many international travel magazines—one of the most stunning natural swimming pools on the planet.
If you are planning your stay with Apuliarentals, this is a must-see stop on your itinerary, especially if you love landscapes that look like they belong on a movie set.
Myth and History
The name "Poesia" comes from the Greek word posia, referring to a freshwater spring that was once found inside the cave. However, local folklore tells a more romantic story: it is said that a beautiful princess loved to swim here, attracting poets from all over the Mediterranean who traveled just to dedicate their verses to her.
Today, the Grotta della Poesia is part of the Roca Vecchia archaeological area, where you can admire ancient Messapian walls and votive inscriptions, proving this site has been considered sacred since antiquity.
